Autochthonous species of Menorca

By Clara Castellote

The red cow:

The name comes from its colour. It is similar to other species of Mediterranean cows. It has red skin, its head is small and short and has no horns. These cows weigh between 400 and 450 kilograms, while the bulls weigh between 700 and 800 kilograms. It does not give much milk, the Fresian cow produces more.

The Menorcan horse:

This has black skin. It is docile, well-behaved and placid. It is a very obedient animal, stronger and bigger that the normal horse. It is a good animal for working.

Menorca has one very important festival, that of Sant Joan, and horses play an important part in these festivals.

The Menorcan hen:

This has black and bright-green feathers and big white ears. It weighs between 3 and 3.5 kilograms. These hens lay only 100 or 120 eggs every year; these are white and weigh around 60 grams. Its meat is not very good. There are other types of hen in Menorca but the typical one is in danger of extinction.
